Short answer
Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that shows your ads across Google's entire inventory (Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps) from a single campaign. You set the conversion goal, the budget, the creative assets and some audience signals; Google's AI decides where and to whom to show each ad. It works well when your conversion tracking is reliable and you have good creative assets; without that, it spends aimlessly.
Performance Max (or "PMax") is one of the most used Google Ads campaigns and also one of the most confusing. The reason: you hand a lot of control to Google's AI. Understanding how it works is the best way to take advantage of it without losing your way.
How it works under the hood
- Conversion goal: you tell Google what counts as success, like a purchase, a form or a call. It's the most important piece.
- Asset groups: text, images, videos and logos that Google combines to create ads for each channel.
- Audience signals: hints about your ideal customer, like your customer lists, website visitors or interests. They are a starting point, not strict targeting.
- Search themes: ideas of what your customer searches for, to guide Google on Search.
When it makes sense and when it doesn't
- It makes sense if you already measure your conversions well, have good images and, ideally, your own videos, and want to grow beyond Search.
- Not yet if you don't have reliable measurement, if your budget is very small or if you need to control exactly which searches you show up for.
Performance Max and Search: how they coexist
Performance Max doesn't have to replace your Search campaigns. According to Google, when a search exactly matches a keyword in your Search campaign, that campaign takes priority. Many accounts use Search for their most important keywords and Performance Max to find new demand.
You have more control today than before
When it launched, Performance Max showed very little information. Google has gradually opened up more visibility and control:
- Search terms report, to see which searches triggered your ads.
- Campaign-level negative keywords, to exclude searches that don't help you.
- Channel performance report (in beta), to see how it does on each network.
- Asset-level statistics: conversions, cost and clicks for your text, images and videos.
- Device and age controls, in addition to brand exclusions.
Best practices
- Measure properly before launching. If you give Google the wrong conversion, it will optimize for the wrong thing.
- Upload your own videos. If you don't upload any, Google may create automatic videos from your images and text, and they don't always represent your brand well.
- Review search terms often and add negatives.
- Separate your brand if you want to measure separately how much comes from people who already know you.
- Be patient. The campaign needs a few weeks to learn; avoid big changes every few days.
Common mistakes
- Launching without conversion tracking or with conversions that aren't real sales.
- Using a single asset group for very different products or services.
- Judging it by click volume instead of cost per result.
- Turning off Search campaigns that were already working to move everything to Performance Max.
